Raw (2016)
Dir: Julia Ducournau
Wir: Julia Ducournau
Like her sister Alexia (Ella Rumpf), and her parents before them,
Justine (Garance Marillier) is attending a prestigious veterinary
school. The freshmen, or rookies, are hazed by their upperclassmen. The
hazing is like we’ve seen on screen previously but the vets in training
have ready access to animal blood and parts. One such ritual involves
the eating of an internal organ and Justine, a life long vegetarian,
initially balks. However, Alexia steps in and forces little sis to
consume the meat. Later that night Justine breaks out in horrible hives
and develops a taste for flesh.
A taste that evolves from shawarmama to raw chicken to human flesh.
The French-Belgium co-production is meant to shock and it succeeds.
Cannibalism isn’t the only shock tactic employed as Justine comes to
terms with her craving for long pig as she navigates the rocky
relationship with her older sister. Viewers in search of the disturbing
will find plenty to entertain them. Those looking for depth of
characters and insight into societal norms may be disappointed. RAW is a
film that tries to appear arty and a character study but it is really an
excuse to jolt the viewer and set up a surprise ending. And some viewers
may be fine with that.
