Like distrotest.net, but it only lets you test one thing.

Feel the thrill of editing text.dat and poking around in SCFG without committing to 15 - 30 painful minutes of installing stuff for yourself.

Perfect for people who don't have a machine of their own to install Synchronet on. A real time saver for sysops who were probably going to abandon their BBS after a few days anyway.

I guess an argument could be made for a site that lets you test Mystic, Synchronet, etc. A friend of mine worked on something like that years ago, but he lost interest in it. You'd have to invest a bunch of time and effort into preparing VM templates or
whatever and (automated or otherwise) keeping them up to date. Then two or three people would use it every year.

So, sort of like a virtual sysop king of thing? Let you configure & customize Synchronet and accept callers? Why not just download Synchronet and use it for
a bit? I don't think you'd need an external site for that.

Anyway, I do have a 3G dongle I was toying with the idea of setting it up
    as
a modem but just the fight with lines noise and poor quality for that ONE call a year you might get....Just not worth it.

The only reliable way to do it is with POTS from end to end, and it's hard to say if that even exists anymore. Once compression and lag come into play, it goes downhill quickly.

I'm not sure how many calls I'd need to receive before I considered it worthwhile, but I'm not too keen on paying for a POTS line just to service the occasional visitor's nostalgia.

Yep.. :) I think it would be possible - It would be basically like a pre-built virtual machine that could be added to a cloud server and powered on,
similar to Amazon AWS. But as you said, running a BBS requires a lot of tweaking. And customization
too. So I'd rather just download it and mess with it on my own system.

However, Marisa (who posts on dove-net) offers Synchronet cloud hosting, so someone could run it on a machine hosted online if they don't want to host it on a PC at home..

I guess an argument could be made for a site that lets you test Mystic, Synchronet, etc. A friend of mine worked on something like that years ago,

So I run pretty much everything in docker - including SBBS at the moment, and mystic when I used it.

The good thing about docker, is that you can test/play very quickly "docker run
...", and after a brief download of the image you are running - you are up and using (and configuring first if it is the first time).

For testing/playing, where you dont care about loosing data, then docker cleans
itself up when the container stops. If you want to keep it longer, then you just provide persistent storage to the container.

So, its a good way to try, play almost instantly, and if you dont like, you "docker rm" and move on.

The Millionaire wants to go to a website, click on a button, and then find himself staring at a test instance of Synchronet shortly thereafter. Docker is
great and could certainly be a piece of the puzzle, but I don't think it satisfies his latest
    wishlist item on its own.

    my
    morning PopTarts lately.

Yeah, I was doing that for a while as I found that dicking around with the toaster really cut into my text.dat editing time. I found that the PopTarts got too soggy, so now I'm just eating them raw. I just rip open the foil and stack the tarts together,
plain side out, so that it's like eating a frosting sandwich. If you jam them
in your mouth and then press the other end against your monitor while leaning progressively further forward, the pressure will keep feeding the sammitch into
    your gullet
while keeping both of your hands free to attend to your important sysop duties.
Of course next you'll want to talk about catheters vs. diapers but that's a whole other conversation I tell you what.

What does either of those sentences actually mean?
What's the URL of this "distrotest site"?
What exactly is a Synchronet Test Site Server?

    The site is called: www.distrotest.net

    Thanks. Interesting.

The Millionaire wants to go to a website, click on a button, and then find himself staring at a test instance of Synchronet shortly thereafter. Docker is great and could certainly be a piece of the puzzle, but I don't think it satisfies his latest wishlist item on its own.

    It certainly could be.

That "click", could behind the scenes result in a "docker run ...", and then a redirect to the web ui ...

This sounds perfect as I'm VERY BUSY - I've had to resort to microwavin my
    morning PopTarts lately.

Yeah, I was doing that for a while as I found that dicking around with the toaster really cut into my text.dat editing time. I found that the PopTarts got too soggy, so now I'm just eating them raw. I just rip open the foil an

i just eat them cold. i like the cinnamon ones.

Heh. I don't know. I was in my 20's when I started. She's probably the
youngest person that works in our corporate office so I'm sure the lady she
was talking to is closer to my age.
