• And good new comedies

From boraxman@21:1/101 to All on Thursday, April 17, 2025 23:26:46
I've kind of been out of the loop regarding movies. Rarely go to the cinema, and half the time, its with the kids to watch a kids movie. The other reason is not much has interested me.

But one thing has bothered me, and I'm wondering whether anywhere here might have some recommendations. I do enjoy a good, witty comedy, but I've enjoyed very few, if any, new ones over the past, oh so many years.

I'm someone who enjoys screwball comedies, the Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker movies (Naked Gun, Flying High, etc), some of the Police Academy, Monty Python. John Candy was in some good movies, Uncle Buck, Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Other favourites are Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, This is Spinal Tap, Mrs Doubtfire. Tropic Thunder was a good one, more recent, but even that is well over a decade old now

It seems there were many from the 70s, 80s and 90s but I haven't noticed many coming out in more recent years. I think the last I saw was "Office Party", which was ages ago, and OK.

Anyone seen or know of anything good and new worth watching?

... Nine times out of ten the statisticians are wrong

Yes, I saw that. Can't stand remakes. I did see "Due Date", which was basically Planes, Trains and Automobiles but not as funny or endearing.

There is a remake of Naked Gun coming out soon.

It looked more like a new sequel rather than a remake (though I think the title is just "The Naked Gun"); it sounded like the character played by Liam Nisson is related to Frank Drebin.

    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

I should walk my comment back a little. What I don't like is the trend of just remaking movies because, just because they want to make a movie and don't have a good new idea and want to make it for "modern audiences". (think Ghostbusters, Total Recall, etc).

Some remakes are actually decent, like last years Nosferatu. That was made with an appreciation and reverence of the original.

I didn't know it was called Airplane! until much later. I also didn't realised that ZAZ didn't make Flying High 2 until much later too.

I think it was to make the name more distinctive. There was an Australian movie called "Airport 80" at the time, and perhaps it was too similar. We also call Burger King "Hungry Jacks" because there was an already existing Burger King business in Australia.

Here is another tidbit. Airplane! is largely a parody of an earlier flight "disaster" movie called Zero Hour!.

They must have closed down, because in the 2000s we had "Burger King" start in Australia as well. So both Hungry Jacks and a few Burger King stores, having pretty much the same thing.

Lots of people have commented that Hollywood is formula-based now. Have
an action film set in X city with these actors and you're guaranteed a
return of X dollars. Not much room for inventive film in Hollywood -
but that's what independent film is for - and the investment floor is
so low nowadays that I've seen indie films shot on iPhones!

    Hi Bo,

there are really very few comedies left that are good and at a level where they don't just seem silly.

My favorites are the old black and white comedies, exactly those screwball comedies with brains and a lot of wit, like the ones with Gary Grant:
    1. Arsenic and Old Lace
    2. Bringing Up Baby
    3. Holiday
    4. Monkey Business
    5. Houseboat
    6. the Philadelphia Story
    7. ...

comedies with brains and a lot of wit, like the ones with Gary Grant:

His dramas are pretty good too. North by Northwest and To Catch a Thief are my favorites.

    1. Arsenic and Old Lace

I tried watching this a couple times, but it was just too wacky for my taste.

    Bringing Up Baby
    Monkey Business
    Houseboat

Yup, all good. Add to that:
    Father Goose

Hey Neo, those are all great movies! The 'Topper' series of movies was
    also pretty funny!

Forgot about those. Good stuff. Others I like are:
I Was a Male War Bride
    The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer
    His Girl Friday
The Bishop's Wife (not a comedy, per se., but plenty of lite moments)

Shameless plug here, Linux Magazine #294 has a nice article, by an author with a delicious horse smell, about setting up a Youtube frontend that removes Youtube ads AND also sponsored segments from videos.

If you are on Android you can also use NewPipe, which sadly does not do the sponsored segment trimming.

Happen to have a link to this? It's probably searchable, but I'm on a Commodore right now :). When I went to look at issue 294 from linux-magazine site (with 'links' browser), I didn't see the article.

I am afraid it is paywalled. The Linux New Media folks usually release the articles for public open view some months after publication.
