    Photographer: Cindy Todd
    Summary Author: Cindy Todd

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, shown above, is in the Big Sur
area of California. There’s lots to see here, including amazing
    coastline views, 300 ft tall (91 m), 2,500-year-old redwood
trees and a waterfall that actually falls onto the beach ( McWay
Falls). The Big Sur coast road ( Highway 1) at times seems to
dramatically teeter on the brink the of winding coastline. Julia
Pfeiffer Burns State Park is a protected area for all marine
    life.

While camping at one of the park’s two environmental campsites, I not
only was rewarded with a stunning sunset but fell asleep to the
repetitive sounds of the ocean surf, hundreds of feet below me. Photo
    taken on January 11, 2020.

Shown above is an exceptionally long Sierra Wave lenticular
cloud formation that dominated the sky over Washoe Lake, Nevada.
Lake Tahoe is just over the ridge at right. These orographic
clouds may form when strong winds blow across mountain ridges, creating
an atmospheric standing wave or lee wave. This one lasted from
mid-afternoon until after sunset. Photo taken on February 9, 2020.

that was chosen by viewers like you in our monthly Viewers' Choice
polls. Join us as we look back at these intriguing and captivating
    images.
    Photographer: Frank Olsen
Summary Authors: Frank Olsen; Jim Foster

June 2014 Viewer's Choice The photo above features the
scintillating spirals of a green aurora as observed from
Andoya Island, Norway. The rock from which these northern
lights seem to emanate is called Bleiksoya or Bleik island.
Green colors occur when charged particles from the Sun ( solar
wind) excite nitrogen molecules and atoms in the Earth's upper
atmosphere -- approximately 60 miles (96 km) above the Earth's
surface. Note that the most vibrant colors and eye-catching shapes and
patterns typically result from particularly strong solar flares.
Bleik Island is acclaimed for having the largest puffin colonies in
Norway. Photo taken around 11 p.m. on December 20, 2013.
Photo Details: Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark III; Software: Adobe
Photoshop CC Windows; Exposure Time: 4.000s; ISO equivalent: 2000.

    Photographer: John Chumack
    Summary Author: John Chumack

Shown above is Rupes Recta (Latin for straight cliff. This
Straight Wall is actually a linear, surface fault having a
length of 68 miles (110 km), a typical width of between 1.2 and 1.9
    miles (2-3 km), and a height ranging from 787 to 984 feet (240–300 m).
Although it appears to be a crack in the lunar surface, in actuality
the grade of this fault’s slope is relatively shallow.

Birt Crater is the 10.6 mile-wide crater closest to the Straight
Wall. It has a smaller crater on its rim known as Birt A. Just west
(left) of this crater is another small snake-like canyon feature called
    Birt Rima - Rille.

Arzachel Crater, the largest crater on this image, upper right of
the frame, is 60 miles (96 km) across and 2.2 miles (3.6 km) deep. The
rugged central peak of Arzachel is prominent, rising 0.9 miles (1.5 km)
above the crater floor. Image captured on April 4, 2020.

September 2012 Viewer's Choice Photographer: Alexandru
    Tudorica;
    Summary Author: Alexandru Tudorica

The panorama above features Laguna Verde in Chile, a salt lake
lying 14,200 ft (4,350 m) above sea level in the central Andes.
It's rimmed by some of the highest volcanoes in the world, with the
19,300 ft (5,900 m) Cerro Laguna Verde visible in the background
(left-center). Its waters are being replenished by ice and snow melting
on the surrounding mountains and by geothermal springs. The
turquoise color of the lake comes from algae that live in it and
perhaps from suspended sediments as well. Note that on the right,
above the cloud deck, the Milky Way can be seen, while at left the
zodiacal light is evident. Panorama taken on August 5, 2014.

Sea Stacks off Aci Trezza, Italy

    August 04, 2020

    IMG 20200214_115536_filtered

    Photographer: Michela Meda
    Summary Author: Michela Meda
Where today rises Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in
Europe, during the Quaternary, a wide gulf opened along the line of
contact between the Eurasian and African plates. Because of the
friction between these plates, from 600,000 years ago through
now, an extended period of submarine volcanic activity has
occurred. Shown above are the Stacks (Faraglioni) of Acitrezza and
Lachea Island. Their origin is magmatic and is confirmed by the
presence of basaltic masses and lavas. The entire complex of these
rock formations is known as the Cyclops Islands, named for the
creature in the ninth book of the Odyssey ( Cyclops Polyphemus).
Blinded by the deception of Ulysses, Cyclops would hurl large boulders
toward the Greek hero in order to try to block his escape into the sea.
The boulders that remain are today’s sea stacks. Photo taken on
    February 14, 2019.
