What I miss around here is the Used Bread Stores .... when
Hostess/Wonder took the gas pipe all of the Wonder and Butternut Bread outlet stores closed. I finally located an outlet store on the near
west side of my corner of the Great American Outback and stopped to get some "last day of sale" (really marked waaaaaaay down) bread to use for stuffing. I was told by the clerk/manager when I was checking out that
her store was the *only* example in Illinois. When I asked "Including Chicago?" she said TastyKake was looking at some "downstate" locations
but noting in Cook county or the collar counties.
The local HoJo franchise restaurants were co-owned by a school-mate's
family. I used to like the AYCE deep fried rubber bands and/or fish
on Wednesday and Friday. And the rest of the menu was pretty decent
too. And nearly every HoJo I was in - locally, near-by or at a travel
plaza on the Pennsy Pike was the same.
I have good (if mostly vague now) memories of HoJo's.. yes, the clams
especially, and that the food in general was good....
Oddly, I can't remember ever having had the I scream at HoJo. My
favorite thing that was not seafood was the hot beef sammich.
