The Mutual Broadcasting System (commonly referred to simply as Mutual; sometimes referred to as MBS, Mutual Radio or the Mutual Radio Network)
was an American commercial radio network in operation from 1934 to 1999.

I knew it best known as the original network home of The Lone Ranger
and The Adventures of Superman and as the long-time radio residence of
The Shadow (Lamont Cranston).

For many years it broadcast the baseball All-Star Game and World Series,
the National Football League, and my Saturday afternoon fall stand-by,
Notre Dame football.

From the mid-1930s and until the demise of the network in 1999, Mutual
ran a highly respected news service accompanied by a variety of popular commentary shows. During the late 1970s, Mutual pioneered the nationwide
late night non-UFO/things that go bump in the night call-in radio show
and introduced the country to Larry King and his sidekick Jim Bohannon (announcer and guest-host). I listened many nights working to get jobs finished at the print shop. Kept me awake, it did.

Title: Chocolate Shadow Cake
Categories: Cakes, Desserts, Chocolate
Yield: 10 Servings

18 1/2 oz Box dark chocolate cake mix
1/4 c Fine chopped almonds
1/4 ts Cloves
1/3 c Oil
1/4 ts Cinnamon
1 1/4 c Water
3 lg Eggs

MMMMM--------------------------FROSTING-------------------------------
1 pt Whip cream
1/2 ts Cocoa
1/4 c Slivered almonds
1 c Powdered sugar
1/4 ts Almond extract

Mix as cake mix. Bake @ 350°F/175°C for 25 to 35 minutes
in greased and floured pans

Chocolate Frosting: In chilled bowl, combine all topping
ingredients, except almonds. Beat at highest speed until
stiff peaks. Slice cooled cake into 4 layers.

Spread 1/4 topping on each. Sprinkle with almonds.
Refrigerate at least 2 hours. Store in refrigerator.

The only radio station I have ever listened to in the past fifty years
is WPOC, a Baltimore country music station. When I saw CBS, NBC and ABC
I thought of TV networks, not radio.

Title: Salisbury Steak
Categories: Main dish, Meats
Yield: 4 Servings

1 lb Ground beef
1/3 c Finely chopped onion
1/4 c Saltine cracker crumbs
1 Egg white
-- slightly beaten
2 tb Milk
2 tb Prepared horseradish
12 oz Mushroon gravy

MMMMM--------------------DILL MASHED POTATOES-------------------------
2 c Hot mashed potatoes
1 1/2 ts Dried dill weed

1. In serving bowl, combine potato ingredients, 1/2 teaspoon salt
and 1/8 teaspoon pepper; keep warm.

2. In medium bowl, combine ground beef, onion, cracker crumbs, egg
white, milk, horseradish. 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper,
mixing lightly but thoroughly. Shape into four oval 1/2 inch thick
patties.

3. Heat large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Place beef
patties in skillet; cook 7 to 8 minutes or until centers are no longer
pink, turning once. Remove from skillet; keep warm.

4. Add gravy to skillet; heat through. Serve with Salisbury steak and
potatoes.
