I ran it by her yesterday at church and she thought she'd be available any of the three weekends recently floated... She tended to think the August ones could be preferable, as school would have started in September (and she both tutors some kids and has been homeschooling a youngster from our church with special needs), but that as it's a weekend, it should probably be ok also....
It would be good to get a date selected (any date that is agreeable to
most) so that folks can then make other plans and/or plan for
    accommodations.

I move that the picnic should be the
weekend of 9/7 to 9/9. All in favor,
say aye, all opposed, say nay.

Keep working at it. One way or the other, somewhere around the Newark area would be very nice.
I haven't noticed anyone else chiming in that would necessarily prefer this area, although Shawn wouldn't have any trouble coming down from
I seem to recall Michael suggesting that a good while ago, but let him
    speak for himself now.

And in the vicinity of Rochester to
    Newark, New York.

Toronto area (only a couple of hours or so for him), and Sean was indicating that this wouldn't be too far for him, either... Nor have I seen anyone from the south offering to host this year, either...

    It may happen someday.

I have noticed that although Newark itself
does not have very much in the way of commercial accommodations, there are a number of AirBnB listings of various sizes near there.
Last time, we were exploring that, and as I recall, it ended up being
a fizzle.... I'd not be able to do much about that part of it... Maybe there would be a better selection of places the weeks we are looking at...? Dunno....
The idea that got floated last time was to get an AirBnB that everyone
could share. There are too many problems with that -- primarily
commitment ahead of time. We would possibly look into AirBnB in Newark
or nearby for ourselves in lieu of a motel/hotel.

I still think that might be a possibility.

Although this recipe calls for 1/2 stalk celery, I'll bet they meant 1/2
rib. OTOH -- your mileage may vary.

Depends on what you mean by stalk or rib or
    stem or finger.

    STUFFED CELERY FINGERS
    cats: starter, vegetarian, dairy
    yield: 18 (4 to 6 servings)

    6 oz cream cheese
    1 Tb milk
    2 Tb finely chopped pecans
1/2 c finely chopped dried figs
    1/2 ts ground ginger
    8 long stalks celery

Blend cream cheese with milk, pecans, figs,
    and ginger. Fill celery with cheese mixture;
    cut each stalk into4wo or three pieces. Chill;
serve on tray as salad or appetizer.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

    Title: Julia's Beans
    Categories: Beans, Ethnic
    Yield: 10 Servings

    1 lb Dried pinto beans
    1 qt Water
    6 c Water
    1 ts Salt
    2 Garlic cloves, peeled
    3 Bacon strips, finely chopped
    -optional

    MMMMM---------------------BEANS A LA CHARRA--------------------------
    2 Serrano chiles, stemmed,
    -seeded and minced*
    2 Jalapeno chiles, stemmed,
    -seeded and minced*
    1 md Onion, chopped
    10 Bacon strips, chopped &
    -sauteed until brown
    3 tb Cilantro, minced

    MMMMM------------------------PRESENTATION-----------------------------
    Snipped cilantro
4 oz Monterey jack cheese, grated
    3 Tomatoes, diced
    1 Onion, diced
    Avocado slices
    3 Serrano chiles, diced

*Wear gloves to work with chiles.

Soak beans in about 1 quart hot water, just enough to thoroughly
cover, for 30 minutes. Remove any hard pieces, and then rinse the
beans in cool water and drain.

Cook the beans in 5-6 cups fresh water. After the first 30 minutes,
add the salt, garlic, and bacon, if desired. Then let simmer 2 to 3
hours, watching carefully and adding water as needed. When fully
cooked, adjust the salt to taste.

During the last 30 minutes, add all the ingredients except the
cilantro. Stir in minced cilantro just before serving.

Serve with bowls of cilantro, cheese, tomatoes, onion, avocado, and
chiles. Add homemade flour tortillas and you will have a good
    "vegetarian" buffet.

Beans always taste btter if they are prepared in advance and reheated.

We can do it that week end, just plan on coming pretty much
straight back from VT, do some visiting in NY before the picnic.
    Which week is VT, then...?
Last part of July into August. Too long to stay in NY, just
    "hanging around".
So when would you plan to be up in NY...? And would you first
spend a little time in the M'ville area...?

We'd probably come up at the end of August or possibly do our visiting after the picnic. Have to check the calendar for appointments when we
get back. We'd only stop in M'ville long enough to pick up what's
being held for us and visit the cemetary.

    Ah... ok...

Good chance we'll bring the camper again and set up in Newark
if we decide to picnic there or closer to the site if we picnic
    closer to Rochester.
I checked with Lydia, and she says you can park the camper in
the yard, she can hook you up with electric and water, just not
sewer... She's offered her house for the picnic, including
putting people up in her house... ;) She's out in the

It'll be getting on into apple season when we come up, may see
about getting some Empires to take home with us.

    That could work... :)

    Grin, apple season here!

I estimate my 2 trees may have cropped 300 this year. I've had 2 families help pick as many as they wanted already. Groevery bags so full we had to double them.

Anyways, here's some uses for them.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

    Title: Xxcarol's apple bread
    Categories: Xxcarol, Breadmaker
    Yield: 16 Servings

    2/3 c Milk
    2/3 c Chopped apple (peeled/cored)
    2 ea Eggs
    2 tb Water
    2 tb Cut up butter
    4 c Breadflour
    3 tb Sugar
    1 ts Salt
    3/4 ts Cinnamon
    1 1/4 ts Yeast

Place all ingredients in the bread machine and set to dough mode.
Remove when done and let rise in large pullman type loaf top with the
lid off for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 400F then add pan and bake 17
    minutes.

    Makes an excellent toast bread!

Optional, can make these into little mini-buns (about 20) and freeze.
Toaster oven perfect for a single person!

From the VB kitchen of xxcarol: 28Jul2018

That could be tasty... you'd want fairly crisp pears to get the
right texture... but that should work fine... ;)
As long as nobody is allergic to nuts.
I don't know of anyone that is that we know is coming....
Looking like a small group again?
Might be, but time will tell... there's a few maybes yet...

Those will settle out, one way or another, soon.

Probably... What I have for sures are Shipps, MLoo, Hafflys, me and
Richard, and Fords... and Sean, Shawn and xxCarol as maybes... haven't
heard a peep yea or nay from Dave Drum... I expect my sister to take
part, and maybe her daughter who lives there... Slimmer possibilities
on some of my local friends who have expressed interest... :)

If I think of it, I might ask in produce... and/or just keep
    my eyes open... :)
Keeping the eyes open is probably the better bet. (G)
So, I did check when we shopped Saturday... there were bags
of Empires already out... dunno how long they'll be there, but
I'd guess they should still be around when you come... :)

They should be around well into the fall--my cousin got some last
    November when we were up.

That sounds like you should be able to get them no problem. then... :)

True, even now. We were out for a bit, got home about an hour ago. I
just spent an hour prepping stuff (yellow bell pepper, onion, carrot,
celery, yellow squash and a boneless pork chop) to do a stir fry
tonight. Got the rice cooker going and pulled out orange peel, garlic
and ginger for seasoning. Now I'm off my feet until Steve is ready for
me to cook. He's working on a project for the house that I can't tell
him to break off at a certain time--I work on his timing so the stir fry
    works well.

came up, then... sounds like they are coping relatively ok, though...

She is down there now, no word as to how things are going tho.

Ah, so now there is backup help there again... how long will she stay
    this time...?

    (Empires)
Steve found some VT grown ones up here in Hanniford's.
So you picked up some...? :)
For the group, didn't bring any home but will try to when we
    come up for the picnic.
Ah... Another reason to make it to the picnic... ;)
Yes, and maybe get another type or two to make some apple butter
    and apple sauce.
There are indeed lots of varieties available up here in apple
    country.... ;)
Yes, and after the picnic, the restriction on time on my feet
will be lifted. We've got a peeler/corer/slicer gizmo that will
make short work of that part but will still have to cook and
    can the apples.
As long as you are able to some parts of it sitting down in case
being on your feet gets to be too much still... ;)

True, even now. We were out for a bit, got home about an hour ago. I
just spent an hour prepping stuff (yellow bell pepper, onion, carrot, celery, yellow squash and a boneless pork chop) to do a stir fry
tonight. Got the rice cooker going and pulled out orange peel, garlic
and ginger for seasoning. Now I'm off my feet until Steve is ready for
me to cook. He's working on a project for the house that I can't tell
him to break off at a certain time--I work on his timing so the stir
    fry works well.

And his working on his project gives you a breather part way through,
too... ;) That worked nicely... :) Sounds like a tasty stir-fry,
    too... ;)

    Hi Nancy,

Still somewhat limited in what she can do until she can get out
of the sling. I think she has about 2-3 weeks yet but she's
probably trying to do more than she should be.
Presumably Steve's Dad is doing well enough to be able to do
some NB>> things for (or with) her....?

    Hopefully, that hasn't been addressed.

Might be something to check up on...

    Probably so.

before the heart issue came up so she's going to go, just to see
    how things are progressing.

Hopefully everything is going well with his parents... :)

Dad is in rough shape. He's in the rehab facility, has major memory
