Different strokes... I don't shop online, either... Richard does, at
least for some things.... and, like you, will get thing unobtainable locally... though not at Amazon....

Other than the fact that the computer you normally use does not do graphical internet surfing, do you have something against Amazon? I
know that Dave Drum is prejudiced against Walmart, but do you feel that way about Amazon?

Lowe's (building materials and hardware) is sliding toward being
bundled w/Wally World in my bad-boys list. For many of the same
reasons.

We do a lot of shopping on Amazon, and also use them to search for
reviews of products that we might buy at a brick and mortar shop. The fact that they give us a 5% discount on everything we buy from them
does not hurt.

It's mostly that for what Richard is looking for, Amazon is almost
always priced way higher than what he can find elsewhere.... He's
usually looking for something for an older computer, or this old
house, or the camp, or the church.... so often, he's looking for used parts, too.... He finds that Ebay is a better source and less
expensive (yes, he knows how to winnow out the outrageous priced offerings) for what he's looking for... For the same reason, he goes
to Tiger Direct rather than Newegg...
For us, Amazon is priced equal to or less than other places on most DS>things we would buy.
We don't buy used, that may well be the biggest difference in your
and our shopping preferences.
I am aware of some people who have gotten quite stung by buying stuff
on Ebay. Stephen is one example. I have also bought some things
on Ebay and been quite satisfied with them.

I've learned to really price shop when it comes to Amazon with a lot
of things. It just depends on how bad you want it and yes, I am a
member of Amazon Prime so the "free" two-day shipping on many items is something I like.

It also depends on what you're shopping for also. Two of my favorite places is overstock.com and wayfair.com.

I've been stung by eBay once but once out of eighteen years of being a member of eBay isn't bad.

We also like Amazon Prime. I think it saves us more in shipping
charges than it costs. One of the things I really like about Amazon is that they have reviews on their products. Granted that reviews need to
be taken with a grain of salt at times, but they can be a valuable
source of information. For example, we are shopping for an Air Fryer.
For some (many?) models, I read frequent reviews that are verified purchases that say things like -- stopped working after one week/69
days (warenty was 60 days) and also teflon coating started peeling off after a couple of uses. NEXT.
Once I find something I like, I will then cross check it with places
like Best Buy, Lowe's, Ace, Bed Bath and Beyond and other places that
are relevant for the item being searched. Most of the time, Amazon
comes out the winner.

We have gotten things from overstock.com. Only recently heard of wayfare.com, but they sound interesting.

Our son also got stung on an auto purchase through Ebay. He got the vehicle but did not get paperwork he needed to register it in the US.
It took him months to get it cleared up.

The items that we have purchased on Ebay were mostly household decorations, hand crafted and were exactly as advertised.

Which one did you settle on? And how's it working out? I bought an air fryer from Best Buy from their "Deal of the Day" e-mail for small
change. Which I still haven't unboxed. It was *NOT* the Cook's
Illustrated "best" model (Philips TurboStar Airfryer, Avance Digital ($249.95)) as mine was more like $35.

shopping. About the only things I physically shop for now are
groceries, toiletries, and a few automotive items. Other than that,
it's online.
I usually get older computer and amateur radio equipment off of eBay.
A good example is I needed a USB 2.0 card for the BBS (yes, older). Bought a brand-new card with four external connectors and one internal
for $5 with free shipping. This uses an industry-standard card and
will work nicely with ArcaOS. This old NetVista I have the BBS on has
USB 1.0 and you don't want to do any big file transfers with that. :D

That Philips seems to be the only one that we do not see at least a handful of negative reviews. BUT, it is way more expensive than the
rest. Like you, we saw a Best Buy sale advert for a smaller Chefman at $49.99 (reg = $69.99) and decided to get it just as a trial basis to
learn whether we liked the idea or not, and to help figure out what we might want in a bigger/better model. Gail has liked it and is still learning. BUT, we are still running up against a preponderance of repeating negative reviews on most models we have looked at. So, the
jury is still out on what might be our forever Air Fryer (most likely
if we buy another, we might well keep this one as well).
