Different strokes... I don't shop online, either... Richard does, at
least for some things.... and, like you, will get thing unobtainable locally... though not at Amazon....

Other than the fact that the computer you normally use does not do
graphical internet surfing, do you have something against Amazon? I
know that Dave Drum is prejudiced against Walmart, but do you feel that
    way about Amazon?

We do a lot of shopping on Amazon, and also use them to search for
reviews of products that we might buy at a brick and mortar shop. The
fact that they give us a 5% discount on everything we buy from them does
    not hurt.

It is NOT a prejudice. It is a carefully considered judgement. Constantly reinforced by observation and experience.

    Title: K-Mart Subs
Categories: Sandwiches, Breads, Cheese, Pork, Beef
    Yield: 4 Sandwiches

    4 Submarine rolls; White soft
    - split Sarah Lee
    8 sl Salami; w/peppercorns
    4 sl Oscar Mayer bologna
    4 sl Oscar Mayer honey-roasted
    - ham
    4 sl Kraft American cheese
    1/4 Onion; sliced sliver thin
    1/2 oz Lettuce; shredded
    2 Tomatoes; sliced 1/8" thick
1 oz Banana peppers; in rings
    1 Dill pickle; thin lengthwise
    - slices
    1 oz French's yellow mustard

About This Recipe: "I had an awful craving hit me for one of
these wonderful K-mart Subs and HAD to have one! I searched
high and low and finally found a woman on a message board
that used to work the deli counter in the late 80's at a
K-mart in Dayton, Ohio. This was one of the same stores that
my Mom would take me as a kid to get one of these wonderful
subs and a frozen Coke! I used to stand in front of the
counter and watch them make these subs and remembered all
but one of the ingredients. Make sure that you wrap your
subs and allow them to sit for 30 minutes before serving or
they are not the same. This allows the bread, meat and
veggies to show some love to one another."

Slice all of your veg; dill pickle, tomato, lettuce and
onion. Layout your meats in a stack and slice them half.
    Slice your cheese in half.

Open the rolls without breaking the hinge of the bread.
Squirt on the mustard in a V shape pattern across both the
    top and bottom bun.

TOP BUN: Place 4-6 pickle slivers on the top bun.

BOTTOM BUN: 4 salami halves. 2 bologna halves. 2 cheese
slices. 2 ham halves. 4 tomato slices. Shredded lettuce. 4-8
    pepper rings.

It's mostly that for what Richard is looking for, Amazon is almost
always priced way higher than what he can find elsewhere.... He's
usually looking for something for an older computer, or this old house,
or the camp, or the church.... so often, he's looking for used parts,

For us, Amazon is priced equal to or less than other places on most DS>things we would buy.

I've learned to really price shop when it comes to Amazon with a lot of
things. It just depends on how bad you want it and yes, I am a member
of Amazon Prime so the "free" two-day shipping on many items is
    something I like.

We don't buy used, that may well be the biggest difference in your
    and our shopping preferences.

It also depends on what you're shopping for also. Two of my favorite
    places is overstock.com and wayfair.com.

I am aware of some people who have gotten quite stung by buying stuff
on Ebay. Stephen is one example. I have also bought some things
on Ebay and been quite satisfied with them.

I've been stung by eBay once but once out of eighteen years of being a
    member of eBay isn't bad.

A side note: you'll notice I'm replying using OLX. I do have a legal registered copy (I still have the diskettes and manual around here). In
order to run this, I downloaded a version of DOSbox that has Windows
3.11 installed with special modifications. It works quite well under
DOSbox and Windows 10 64-bit. Ah, the nostalgia.

    Title: Patout's Boiled Crawfish
Categories: Cajun, Main dish, Fish, Barbecue
    Yield: 8 Servings

    MMMMM------------------------FOR THE BOIL-----------------------------
    40 lb Live crawfish
    1/2 c Ground white pepper
    1/2 c Ground black pepper
12 ea Ears of corn, shucked
    1 c Salt
    1/2 c Ground red pepper
    5 lb Small white onions
    5 lb Small new potatoes

    MMMMM--------------------------SPRINKLE-------------------------------
    1/2 c Ground white pepper
    1/2 c Ground black pepper
    1/2 c Ground red pepper
    2 c Salt

Alex Patout describes Crawfish as "a delicacy made for sharing-- in
fact, in Cajun country, boiling crawfish for only two people counts
as a venial sin." Wash the crawfish well and pick out any fish bones
or other debris. Fill a great big (40-quart) Stockpot a quarter full
of water. Add the salt and peppers and bring to boil. Add the whole
onions, the corn, and the new potatoes (it will be easy to remove
them later if you put them in a cloth sack). Return to boil, cover,
lower heat to medium, and let cook for 8 minutes. Add crawfish,
cover again and raise heat to high. After steam begins to escape from
under the lid, cook 7 minutes more. Remove from heat and let sit for
4 minutes. Do *NOT* remove the lid until this point!
Remove the onions, corn, and potatoes to a bowl and drain the
crawfish. Place the crawfish in a large insulated container (an ce
chest works well, as do the thick waterproof boxes chickens are
shipped in, which your butcher may give you for free). Have your
*SPRINKLE* ready and sprinkle over the crawfish and mix them well to
coat. Cover and let sit for 7 minutes.
Serve immediately with the onions, corn, new potatoes, and lots of
French bread on a large table covered with plenty of paper. When
everyone has eaten his fill, everyone "peels for the house." The
peeled tails can then be used in cold crawfish cocktail or salad or
for Fried Crawfish the next day. Serves 8-10 NOTE: Most of the salt
is not added until after the cooking process because too much salt
added during cooking makes the flesh of the crawfish adhere to the
shell. From Alex Patout's "Cajun Home Cooking" -- Random House

    3 tb Lemon juice
    1 cl Garlic; minced
1 1/2 ts Grated orange peel (zest)
    1/2 ts Salt
    1/4 ts Fresh ground pepper

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl or jar. Mix
well. Cover. Refrigerate until ready to use. Makes
    about 1 cup.

On a bed of iceberg lettuce, layer chicken chunks,
walnuts, Mandarin orange segments and toasted coconut.

To toast sweetened shredded coconut, sprinkle some in a
single layer on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350°F/175°C for
10 to 15 minutes or until light golden brown. Stir and
check frequently to prevent burning. Remove from oven
and allow to cool before using.

    Top with citrus dressing.

    Hello Dale.

21 Feb 19 03:08, you wrote to me:

We also like Amazon Prime. I think it saves us more in shipping
charges than it costs. One of the things I really like about Amazon
is that they have reviews on their products. Granted that reviews

The reviews can be filled with interesting information. I do occasionally buy parts for my guns on Amazon, surprisingly enough, since some of the stuff can be hard to come by even on places like eBay.

Once I find something I like, I will then cross check it with places
like Best Buy, Lowe's, Ace, Bed Bath and Beyond and other places that
are relevant for the item being searched. Most of the time, Amazon
    comes out the winner.

Yep, same here. Since I live 30 minutes for anywhere, I am willing to wait a couple of days to be able to come home and have what I ordered waiting for me so I don't have to go through the hassle of physically shopping. About the only things I physically shop for now are groceries, toiletries, and a few automotive items. Other than that, it's online.

We have gotten things from overstock.com. Only recently heard of wayfare.com, but they sound interesting.

Wayfair is great. My parents have bought a lot of furniture from them. Free shipping and the quality of the furniture has been quite good. It surprised me, honestly. Once I get my own place, I might get a few things from them. I am crazy enough to drive down to IKEA in Atlanta with my parents' little 4x8' trailer in tow to pick up a few odds and ends. Just because, you know.

Our son also got stung on an auto purchase through Ebay. He got the vehicle but did not get paperwork he needed to register it in the US.
It took him months to get it cleared up.

I've heard several horror stories like that. I think I'd like to still shop for a vehicle in person.

The items that we have purchased on Ebay were mostly household decorations, hand crafted and were exactly as advertised.

I usually get older computer and amateur radio equipment off of eBay. A good example is I needed a USB 2.0 card for the BBS (yes, older). Bought a brand-new card with four external connectors and one internal for $5 with free shipping. This uses an industry-standard card and will work nicely with ArcaOS. This old NetVista I have the BBS on has USB 1.0 and you don't want to do any big file transfers with that. :D

    Later,
    Sean

Which one did you settle on? And how's it working out? I bought an air fryer from Best Buy from their "Deal of the Day" e-mail for small
change. Which I still haven't unboxed. It was *NOT* the Cook's
Illustrated "best" model (Philips TurboStar Airfryer, Avance Digital ($249.95)) as mine was more like $35.

That Philips seems to be the only one that we do not see at least a
handful of negative reviews. BUT, it is way more expensive than the
rest. Like you, we saw a Best Buy sale advert for a smaller Chefman at
$49.99 (reg = $69.99) and decided to get it just as a trial basis to
learn whether we liked the idea or not, and to help figure out what we
might want in a bigger/better model. Gail has liked it and is still
learning. BUT, we are still running up against a preponderance of
repeating negative reviews on most models we have looked at. So, the
jury is still out on what might be our forever Air Fryer (most likely if
we buy another, we might well keep this one as well).

is that they have reviews on their products. Granted that reviews

The reviews can be filled with interesting information. I do

I only begin to trust reviews when the same complaint is listed in
multiple reviews by verified purchases. Some errant reviews are easy
enough to spot -- e.g. someone reviewing a 10 quart Air fryer and
claiming it is too small. But when I see a half dozen reviews that talk
about teflon coating peeling off, or about bad plastic smell, I take
    notice.

occasionally buy parts for my guns on Amazon, surprisingly enough,
since some of the stuff can be hard to come by even on places like

Interesting. Can you buy enough parts to actually make a gun?

shopping. About the only things I physically shop for now are
groceries, toiletries, and a few automotive items. Other than that,

Pretty much the same with us, but with some exceptions. We have been
known to buy small appliances from BJs or Costco -- but we go there for groceries anyhow.

I usually get older computer and amateur radio equipment off of eBay.
A good example is I needed a USB 2.0 card for the BBS (yes, older). Bought a brand-new card with four external connectors and one internal

I interpret what Nancy said to be the same sort of thing. Older
computer parts are not what I'd expect to find on Amazon. More likely
to obtain them from someone's basement as a result of a NextDoor post
(that is a nation wide blog type of thing that sponsors local
neighborhoods to form a network for sharing info, etc.).

I have learned to parse out the negatives from reviewers who are obviously clewless as to the purpose/usage/requirements of the reviewed item - be
it a restaurant, a piece of equipment, a food stuff, whatever. Some people
are just filling a deep need to complain. Bv)=

I looked inside the shipping box - what I have is a 4L Emerald Digital.
It was roughly half-price on the sale deal w/free shipping so I didn't
even have to drive across town to pick it up.

Title: Air Fryer Sweet Potato Tots
    Categories: Five, Potatoes, Vegetables
    Yield: 4 servings

    2 sm Sweet potatoes; peeled,
    - 14 oz. total
    1 tb Potato starch
    1/8 ts Garlic powder
1 1/4 ts Kosher salt; divided
    3/4 c Ketchup or Ketchup-Rooster
    - Sauce mix
    Cooking spray

Bring a medium pot of water to a boil over high heat.
Add potatoes, and cook until just fork tender, about 15
minutes. Transfer potatoes to a plate to cool, about 15
    minutes.

Working over a medium bowl, grate potatoes using the
large holes of a box grater. Gently toss with potato
starch, garlic powder and 1 teaspoon salt.

Shape mixture into about 24 (1") tot-shaped cylinders.

Lightly coat air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place
1/2 of tots (about 12) in single layer in the basket,
and spray with cooking spray. Cook at 400°F/205°C until
lightly browned, 12 to 14 minutes, turning tots halfway
through cook time. Remove from fry basket and sprinkle
with 1/8 teaspoon salt. Repeat with remaining tots and
    salt.

    Serve immediately with ketchup.

Serves 4 (serving size: about 6 tots)
