Mines come to mind as well, but they're even noisier.
You mean, to use on them...? SOW, the last day I was up at the Pond
this last trip, we heard some very loud booms... RJ was speculating
that someone might be doing some mining in the area...
Explosives used in mining tend to be set off underground and are more
felt as earthquake-like vibrations than as a "boom". Even in a shallow mine or an open-pit strip mine the explosions will be somewhat muffled
by being in a bore hole or otherwise away from the open air.
I'd be more likely to think it was someone celebrating with aerial fireworks - some "aerial bombs" have the explosive force of a half
stick of 60% dynamite .... which will get your attention even a half
mile or more away from "ground zero".
