My brother tells me we are switching from the AT&T Friends & Family plan
we've been on for the past 10+ years. We got there because Verizon's
billing practices were .......... suspect in extremis. So those two are
out of the pixture. What I'm looking for here is recommendations for
which carrier others have had positive experiences using.

I'm in Canada of course so providers are different, but about a year
and a half ago I switched to one of the pre paid discount companies
and I've never been happier. Went from $97 a month to $45 after tax
plus went from 2gb of data to 5.5gb.

Also keep in mind we pay far to much for wireless in this country so
in the US the same plan would probably be $15 a month or less.

That depends on what you use your cell phone for. Is it something that
you carry with you every where, constantly using it to check email,
weather or what ever? Or is it something that you use only in
extraordinary circumstances, such as car break down. I cannot tell you anything about the former because I do not and probably never will have
a smart phone at $30+ per month. What I have is a flip phone connected
with Tracfone, price last time I renewed it was just under $200 for
three years. I have more accumulated minutes than I will ever use. My
wife has a flip phone connected with T-Mobile. It is slightly more
modern in its connection speed (4G versus maybe 2G -- not that it
matters to either of us so long as it works). The cost for her was an
initial $30, then $3.00 per month. That $3.00 is good for 30 minutes,
no rollover -- but she rarely uses more than 5.

There are other inexpensive options out there, some sponsered by AARP.

    Hope that helps.

This is basically what Gail grew up on in Wisconsin. After we were
married on a *very* low budget, it morphed into bologna salad and we
    have stuck with that since.

Cell phone plan comparisons often are chalk and cheese. I was perfectly
happy with my Virgin Mobile pre-paid flip phone. Then my kid brother
hooked my into his "Friends & Family" plan and gave me a shiny new A7
Samsung flip phone and a bluetooth headset/earpiece as an Xmas present.

I recently bought another Samsung flipper on eBay and found that I can't
use it as it's 2G and there are no 2G networks around here. $25 paper
    weight.

    Title: Cell Phone Cake
    Categories: Desserts, Cakes, Candies
    Yield: 15 Servings

    1 Box Betty Crocker SuperMoist
    - white cake mix
    Tray or cardboard; 18" x 16"
    - covered
    1 1/2 Containers (1 lb ea) Betty
    - Crocker® Rich & Creamy
    - white frosting
Pink paste or gel food color
    Decorating bag with tips
    12 White candy-coated chewing
    - gum squares (Chiclets)
3 3/16 oz Pkg marshmallow flowers
    3 Oval licorice candies
    1 Candy straw

Heat oven to 350°F/175°C (325°F for dark or nonstick
pan). Spray bottom only of 13" x 9" pan with baking
    spray with flour.

Make and bake cake mix as directed on box for 13" x
9" pan, using water, oil and egg whites. Cool 10
minutes; remove from pan to cooling rack.

    Cool completely, about 30 minutes.

Cut 1 1/4" strip from each long side of cake. Trim
each corner of cake to round off, making cell phone
shape. (Discard pieces trimmed from cake or reserve
for another use.) On tray, place cake. Freeze 1 hour.

Divide 1 container of white frosting in half (about
3/4 cup each). Stir food color into half of frosting
    to tint pink.

Spread pink frosting over bottom half of cake. Spread
white frosting over top half of cake.

From 1/2 container of frosting, reserve about 2 tb
white frosting. Tint about 1/4 cup of the frosting
    pink.

Onto center of white-frosted half of cake, spread some
of the pink frosting in square shape for message screen.
Place remaining pink frosting in decorating bag with
    writing tip.

Pipe pink frosting along edge of white-frosted cake.
Arrange gum on cake for number buttons; pipe on numbers
    with pink frosting.

With reserved white frosting, pipe desired message on
message screen. Add marshmallow flowers and licorice
candies. Add candy straw for antenna.

High Altitude (3500-6500 ft): Follow High Altitude
directions on cake mix box for 13" x 9" pan.

Kitchen Tips: Look for paste or gel food color in cake
    decorating departments of craft stores.

Instead of using a decorating bag and tip, place the
frosting in a resealable food-storage plastic bag, cut
a tiny hole in one corner and use to pipe the frosting.
Use different bags for different colors.

It got me to go look at AARP's "Jitterbug" deals. Bv)=

I have been seduced into Smarta$$ phones as a matter of convenience. It's easier to text back and forth sometimes on matters that don't require an immediate answer. And I have come to use it to replace a lot of plastic "loyalty" cards that were straining my wallet - by having the app on my
phone. And, whilst I use it for many things, I am not tethered to it
like some of the younger folks are. We had a case here of a teen aged
girl who was walking along staring into her phone screen and walked into
a light pole, breaking her nose and her elbow when she lost her balance
after face-planting on the pole and fell over. The cell phone was not
    harmed. Bv)=

    Title: Ham Salad
    Categories: Sandwich, Spread, Foodgrinder
    Yield: 2 Cups

We had a case here that one of the deli-counters at an "independent"
grocery store was selling "ham" salad made with bologna. I had bought
some for home use and soon discovered that it contained bologna and not
ham. When I complained to the store they, pretty much, blew me off. So,
I talked with my chilli-cooking friend Ed Fahey who was an inspector for
the city health department about it. They'd have been better served by refunding my money and apologising then changing their signage.

This is the only type of "bologn" anything that doesn't trigger my gag
    reflex.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

    Title: Student's Quick Sausage Bolognese
    Categories: Pork, Mushrooms, Pasta, Sauces
    Yield: 4 Servings

    6 Good-quality sausages; skins
    - removed (680 g/24 oz bulk
    - sausage)
    1 ts Fennel seeds
    250 g Fresh mushrooms; sliced
    - (9 oz)
    +=OR=+
    225 g Can sliced mushrooms (8 oz)
150 ml Red wine (opt) (5 oz)
    660 g Jar tomato pasta sauce;
    - (23.2 oz) *
    300 g Penne pasta; (10 1/2 oz)
    Grated or shaved parmesan;
    - to serve

    * common US jarred pasta sauce size is 28 oz.

Heat a large, wide frying pan, then crumble in the
sausage meat and fennel seeds (there's no need to add
any oil). Fry for a few mins until golden and the fat
is released, stirring well to break up the meat. Add
the mushrooms and fry for a few mins until beginning to
soften. Stir in the wine now, if using, bubble for 1
min, then add the tomato sauce and heat through until
    bubbling.

Meanwhile, boil the penne. When ready, drain and tip
into the sauce. Mix well until completely coated, then
divide between four plates, finishing with a little
    Parmesan cheese.

Tip: Using the meat from good-quality sausages is an
easy way to get lots of flavour in mince dishes without
having to add extra herbs, spices and seasoning.

Yeah that's happened to me with an old palm os phone I loved, I wanted
to just use it but no 2g left.

I do keep an older blackberry on the shelf as a backup that's 3g so
it works as a temp phone when my iphone is in the shop because I
    dropped it again.
