I don't think most foods are beautiful and don't
care much about it. Vegetables are the nicest-
looking raw ingredients, but how misleading is
that? Okay, fruits look okay by and large, but
then some of the tastiest fruit - persimmons,
durian, lychee, and so on, are pretty darn ugly.

The pretty stuff, like zucchini, depends on its taste as defense.
Durians and lychee use spines and smell.

Zucchini, as with villainesses named Natasha, are
to be dreaded.

That sounds like more than I'd use. Then again I still have good
night vision.

I need all ten of them and then some.

That's a problem.

It's getting out of hand.

The massively energy-effiient appliances have mixed
benefits, though, viz. megabass auto sound systems.

I like them when they work better than the old ones.

Your guy cruising around in a hot rod equipped
with such a sound system would likely have a
different notion of better than we would.

He can't hear anyone complaining, after all. Then again after the
idjut uses the system long enough he can't hear anything else either.

A situation where a potentially beneficial
technology has worked in disastrous ways.

I never encountered him, but some of my friends
went to high school with him so am one degree of
separation from him. Also two degrees away from
Huey Newton and Huey Long.

Crabmeat a la Dewey
categories: starter, shellfish
servings: 6

2 lg mushrooms, minced
1 lb lump crabmeat
2 Tb butter
1 1/2 Tb flour
1/4 ts salt
1 c light cream
1 egg yolk
2 oz sherry

Mince mushrooms fine. Pick over crabmeat.

Melt butter in a chafing dish, add mushrooms,
and cook until tender. Add flour and seasonings
and stir. Put the chafing dish over hot water or
a very low flame and add cream. Cook until smooth
and thickened, stirring constantly.

In a bowl, beat together egg yolk and sherry.
Fold in a little hot cream sauce. Add this to the
rest of the mixture and cook until smooth,
stirring constantly. Add crabmeat and cook just
until heated through.

Serve the crabmeat a la Dewey on crisp toast points.
